Tips when buying an electric outboard especially for sailing yachts (and of course other boats):
Performance: Make sure that the outboard engine provides enough power for your sailboat. The power is given in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW) and/or lbs (libs). Horsepower (hp) is only found in gasoline engines, and even there it is an ancient (and inaccurate) unit of measurement. If you only want to sail out and into the harbour with a smaller sailing yacht in calm seas, then electric drives with well under 1000 watts are completely sufficient. However, if you want to turn against the wind and waves with a displacement of 1.5 to 2.5t at wind force +4 in order to reef, then you need a correspondingly powerful electric motor for your sailing yacht with at least 2000 watts or 120 lbs of power, I will be happy to advise you on this.
Should it be a motor with an integrated Li-Ion battery or external batteries? This makes a big difference in terms of handling, range and performance. However, also consider the space required in the case of external batteries. Because the more powerful a motor is, the more electrical voltage (volts) it needs. Roughly speaking, you can say that up to about 750 watts / 80 lbs you can still get by with a 12V battery, then up to about 3 kW or 140 lbs with 2x 12V batteries and after that there are already 4 batteries for 48V.
What are the best electric outboards on the market - are there any test winners?
There are many good electric outboards on the market, but "the best" for you depends on your personal circumstances. It is important to take into account the individual requirements, as electric drives are tested under the same conditions in order to have a clear comparison. For example, e-motor tests usually take place with both an inflatable boat and a sailing yacht. Thus, the engines are tested e.g. with a 24" sailboat with 1.5t displacement, and usually in calm seas in order not to have any environmental influence during the test. However, you have e.g. a 26" sailing yacht with 2t displacement, such circumstances must always be considered. A tip from me personally: always read the test environment carefully as well as who carried out the test (engine tests from yacht magazines are usually very reliable). One of the most recent tests for electric outboards comes from August 2022 on Lake Neusiedl by the magazine Yachtrevue. Some of the best options are the Ecopower 1.0 12V, Ecopower 3.0 24V, Torqeedo Travel 1103C (battery), Epropulsion Spirit (battery) & Navy (48V), the Minn Kota in general for small boats or inflatable boats, Aquamot Trend and Haswing Protruar.
