» What is a lull valve?
The term "calm pusher" is almost self-explanatory: It is a boat engine that is mainly used in sailing yachts to push and drive (also) in calm conditions. From practice you know that the outboard motor is also used on many other occasions, e.g. when maneuvering in the harbor, to accelerate the ride in light wind, to turn into the wind for reefing in the event of a strong breeze or to "escape" from a storm. The driving force of the engine depends on the size, weight, the area of use of the boat – and the desired power reserves for handling in all conditions on the water.
» Motor power and dimensioning
Now, how strong (or weak) should an electric outboard be for your yacht or boat? The answer to this: it depends on various circumstances such as sailing area, wind speeds and, above all, displacement. In case of doubt, it is good to be a bit overpowered (especially with sailing yachts) – this pays off at the latest at the next "borderline situation", as Johannes Vogelhuber knows from his own experience, for example, when you have to turn your sailing yacht into the wind (and keep it there) by means of an electric boat motor in order to reef the sails. But: The more powerful the motor, the more powerful (thus: bigger, heavier and more expensive) the batteries should be. Online shop operators Johannes Vogelhuber, therefore recommends his " Insider tip" , which provides the propulsion or thrust of a standard 48V motor with only 24V (2 x 12V). EcoPower – by the way only available here in the online shop – offers 3 different electric boat motors for sailing yachts up to 1t and up to 3t kg displacement. Prices range from just Euro 990 (for the smallest outboard) to just 1,890 (for the largest and most powerful EcoPower engine).
» Brushless Motors
Now it gets a bit technical: electric motors, such as those used in electric boat motors, lull valves and outboards, are either (classic) with brushes or (modern and contemporary) without brushes. The brushless electric motors for boats – such as EcoPower – score points with the contactless reversal of the polarity of the drive magnets inside them. In this way, a classic wear point of electric motors is eliminated. Brushless motors offer improved energy efficiency and far less wear.
» The right battery
The energy for the electric boat engine comes either from batteries/rechargeable batteries. The type, size, circuitry, and capacity of the battery is critical to how efficiently and for how long the electric motor is powered. Different types of batteries such as AGM, gel, lithium or lead-acid require different handling. In addition, the size and weight of the batteries/rechargeable batteries also play an important role in practice - after all, there is not unlimited storage space on a boat, but the charging times should not be underestimated depending on the circumstances (e.g. solar cells). The aim is therefore to get as much energy as possible out of the most compact pack size possible. We have summarized the most important battery types for you:
- Lithium: Lithium batteries are lightweight, powerful and particularly often rechargeable batteries that are ideal for use as boat batteries. They can be discharged particularly deeply (compared to other battery types) and can therefore be used very flexibly.
- AGM: proven battery technology, ideal as boat batteries for boat engines. AGM batteries are very inexpensive, durable and versatile – from starter batteries to batteries for continuous electric motor operation. A very good compromise for those who find lithium batteries too expensive, but you want to have significantly more charging cycles than classic lead-acid, as well as many more resources, since discharges of up to 80% without battery damage are common throughout.
- Gel: the technology is actually considered obsolete, gel boat batteries are much heavier compared to other types of batteries and actually too expensive to operate boat engines. Lithium or AGM batteries are preferable to gel batteries.
- Lead-acid: the classic supply of boat engines, and also the cheapest variant – yet far fewer charging cycles than AGM or lithium and only 50% discharge before the battery may be damaged. Batteries with lead-acid are available in many different designs - from unusable to quite suitable for the operation of electric boat engines (from unusable to electric boat engines).
» Speeds and their limits
A stronger lull valve brings higher speeds? This is only partially correct, because most yachts and boats (specifically: displacement boats) have a design-related maximum speed: the hull speed. Even with more powerful and powerful boat engines and outboard motors, this speed could no longer be increased. The reason lies in the propagation speed of the self-generated bow and stern wave. The faster the boat goes, the more the wavelength of the bow wave increases – until the bow and stern waves overlap and the boat virtually "holds" in this wave system. Long boats ("length runs") can therefore reach higher speeds than shorter boats. Another important piece of information about speed indicators from engine manufacturers: these measurements always refer to the optimal environment on the water (e.g. absolute calm) and are carried out with particularly light boats. This makes it all the more important to test under realistic conditions – as Johannes Vogelhuber does again and again – and to test these Test results for the engine decision . It is also important to know that the consumption of an electric motor is indirectly proportional to speed:
- When the cruise control is turned halfway, the motor only needs around 30% of the energy needed to reach full speed.
- However, the boat is only 25% slower than at full speed with this 30% consumption!
» About EcoPower
Electric outboards from EcoPower are a real "insider tip" in terms of first-class price-performance ratio (the emphasis is mainly on "performance") - and only available exclusively from us! EcoPower's powerful lull sliders fill a gap in the market for medium-sized sailing yachts – between 20 and 28 feet, for example. The brushless electric motors have been manufactured in Australia since 2002, and since 2013 these motors have also been used specifically in inland areas – mainly on the Australian and Asian markets. The structure and handling of the entire boat engine are uncompromisingly geared to the propulsion of sailing yachts in particular:
- The tiller control can be adjusted in length and thus adapted to the conditions on the boat.
- A digital voltmeter is integrated and shows the battery status.
- The boat engine also has a protective cut-off if the battery gets too low. If the battery voltage drops below the specified value, the motor automatically regulates down to 50% of the drive power. This leaves sufficient reserves for the safe return journey.
- The automatic temperature shut-off (heat protection) of the EcoPower lull gate valve reduces the drive power to 50% from an operating temperature of 110 °C. This prevents damage to the engine.
- The model range includes operating voltages of 12V, 24V and even 48V.
- The smaller models are about as powerful as mid-range models from other manufacturers – although they are significantly cheaper!
- Each of these brushless and absolutely quiet motors comes with a second (spare) rotor/propeller.
Shop operator Johannes Vogelhuber uses the EcoPower himself on his Falcon 24 (KS), built in 1983, displacement: 1,100 kg, at Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland and puts various models of this calm slide through its paces again and again. The result: measurement data that are classified under real Conditions arise and are therefore particularly meaningful!
» About Minn Kota
Minn Kota's electric motors from the USA are probably the best-selling electric outboards in the world. As early as 1934, O.G. Smith invented the first gear-driven electric motor, which was eventually used as a boat engine. Smith eventually named his engine company after his home border regions: Minn Kota as a combination of MINNesota and North DaKOTA. Since then, Minn Kota's technology and motors have been consistently developed for operation on the water. The workmanship is impressive, it is designed for permanent outdoor use: UV-resistant and shatterproof polyamide composite material for the housing of the motor, swivelling one-handed operation, stepless shifting.
» About ePropulsion
Sophisticated electric motors for almost all boat sizes and types: ePropulsion was founded in 2012 by dedicated young engineers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The company and its products combine objectives around the environment, the aquatic ecosystem and the efficient propulsion of boats through clean electric technology. The first official ePropulsion product, the Navy 6.0, won the IF Design Award in 2015 – a strong motivation to drive the development of new and high-performance electric lull valves. ePropulsion offers tiller control as well as control via wireless remote control and steering wheel. ePropulsion's lull valves (e.g. the Navy-Line) have an aluminium housing and direct drive without gearbox. The integrated motor guard slows down or stops the propeller if it is obstructed or blocked in its rotational movement.
» About Torqeedo
Torqeedo has been considered a pioneer of the electric outboard motor scene since 2004.
